D. Gray-Man

Anime Review by LaDy BeLzEeNeF

D. Gray-man is a story set in the end of nineteenth century Europe about a 15-year boy named Allen Walker who has the ability to transform his arm into an anti-demon weapon from a substance called innocence. His left eye, which was cursed by an akuma (demon) when he was younger, allows him to see the demons, which are able to pass themselves off as human. Because of these special abilities, he joins a special organization called the Black Order who are a team of exorcists that are trying to stop the Millenium Earl from destroying the whole world.

The story in D. Gray-man is an interesting mix of action, drama, angst and adventure. You have a classic sorry of good versus evil and I think it sort of brings the element of religion into the series with the parts about innocence and the Noah clan, which was something, I was surprised at. This series starts out a little slow, but after episode 5 things start going and it never stops. D. Gray-man is currently running with 86 episodes so far. There are a few side stories, but unlike other anime that uses side stories as fillers and drag on to death, this series doesn’t do that. Episodes 1-52 make up the 1st season and so far that season has been licensed.

D. Gray-man starts out with Allen as one of the main characters but as the series progresses, the list of characters increases with the addition of Lenalee, Kanda, Lavi, Krory, Mirada, etc. the list goes on and on. There are also the members of the Noah Clan and the villain Millenium Earl and of course Lero. What I like about this series in particular is there are a bunch of other characters that you can grow to love from the side stories. I personally like Lero, even though he’s the Earl’s talking umbrella and just screams all the time, you can’t help but laugh at its antics.

The animation in D. Gray-man was done very well. It’s gloomy and has somewhat of a Halloween feeling in some parts but it works. The fighting scenes are also very well done and as for the music, there are 4 OP and 5 ED themes. So far all of the OP themes have been great and I personally love the current theme right now (UVERworld – Gekidou). The background music definitely compliments the scenes of this series whether its a sad, happy or a fighting moment.

Overall I think D. Gray-Man definitely brings something to the table in terms of plot and you learn to love the characters that are there and so far this series shows no signs of ending anytime soon. The music is great and the animation is nice. If you are looking for something a little bit different but with action, drama and adventure then check out D. Gray-Man. I gave it an overall rating of 8/10.
